In keeping with the University’s commitment to offering the best possible education to its students in the field of health, the University Chair in Traumatology and Sports Medicine has been created, co-chaired by doctors Luis Fernández Rosa, Ramón Cugat Bertomeu, Mikel Sánchez Álvarez, Mariano de Prado Serrano and Pedro Ripoll Pérez de los Cobos.
Dr. Fernández Rosa, professor at the Universidad CEU San Pablo, stated that the objective of the Chair is “the promotion of quality university education and the advancement of research in the field of sports science and medicine”. Dr. Cugat, for his part, highlighted the importance of injury prevention in sportsmen and women in view of the increasing number of injuries. “We see more than 25,000 injuries in federated footballers,” he warned. This increase is linked to the fact that, “in the last 7 seasons, participation in men's football has grown by 11% and in women's football by 62%”. He also drew attention to the role of the University, “where teachers must provide theoretical and practical knowledge to the professionals of the future who will be responsible for the health of our athletes”.
Doctors Sánchez and de Prado explained that the University is the best place to acquire knowledge, which will subsequently be applied and transmitted. Dr. Sánchez stressed “the contribution of the practical application of knowledge in a multidisciplinary field, not only for the athlete, but also for the entire population”. In line with these words, Dr. Ripoll stated that “science must be carried out in an environment such as the University and, in this respect, CEU San Pablo is a leading light”. “We want to transmit all that we have been accumulating for 40-50 years and to do so for our society as a whole, for the benefit of our athletes,” said the specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology.
The initiative aims to provide the necessary scientific information on traumatology and orthopaedic surgery, regenerative medicine and clinical biomechanics, as well as providing a forum for debate for professionals whose scientific or professional activity focuses on this area of knowledge and research.
The events and activities which will take place include scientific conferences, courses, symposiums and meetings of experts, as well as the publication of documents or monographs related to the aforementioned areas. Within the framework of these proposals, the Chair has already held the Conference on Foot and Ankle Pathology in Football Players and, in September, a new monographic course on knee pathology will take place.
The dean of the School of Medicine, Tomás Chivato, and the rector of the University, Rosa Visiedo, both took part in the presentation of the University Chair. They underlined the growing relevance of these disciplines in medical practice as well as the importance of the Chair itself, as it seeks to generate and transmit knowledge which is scientifically true, purely ethical and aesthetically beautiful.
