Medical education is a scientific
field whose primary goal is to achieve excellence in the training of healthcare
professionals, in accordance with the best pedagogical strategies available.
With this purpose in mind, the Medical
Education Unit was born as part of the School of Medicine, under the Chair of Medical Education and
Humanisation 'Nemesio Diez'. The dean of the School, Tomás Chivato, explained that the main mission of the unit is to
promote, encourage, and coordinate lines of action that contribute to better
training of students in the degrees taught: Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Dentistry,
and Genetics.
The Medical Education Unit will
focus on improvement in the acquisition and assessment of competencies and
skills that students must acquire; integration of basic and clinical teachings;
development of multidisciplinary
teaching initiatives that involve students and professors from different
degrees in order to enhance dialogue, teamwork, and collaboration among
different healthcare professionals who provide an integrated view more in line
with work needs; sharing of new teaching methodologies, and development of simulation
and of research in medical education.
The Dean of the School of Health
and Life Sciences at Universidad Abat Oliba CEU, Arcadi Gual Sala, took part in the presentation along with Jordi Palés Argullós, Vice-Dean of the
School of Health and Life Sciences at UAO CEU. The Dean explained the
importance of having a Medical Education Unit in the School of Medicine while
Palés delivered the seminar entitled 'From
Learning Assessment to Assessment for Learning: Programmatical Assessment,'
in which he emphasised the importance of including appropriate feedback to
students in assessment methods, whether the assessment objective is formative
or summative. He highlighted that "Providing
continuous feedback will facilitate the student's awareness of their level of
competency acquisition, their progress, and will allow necessary measures to be
taken, if necessary, for their improvement or correction."
