Eighteen teams,
from ten universities from all over Spain, gathered at the San Estanislao of
Kostka School to participate in the 10th National University Debate Tournament organized
by the
Cánovas Foundation. Two tournament days, 67 debates, 84 participants, 40 judges
and more than 80 organizing volunteers indicate the importance of the
competition.
The University was
doubly represented by the CEU San Pablo-I team, which included the students
Miguel Hermenegildo Franco, Rocío Alberola, Marta Guerra and Maider Bernabé,
formed by Professor Fernando Arruga; and the CEU San Pablo-II team made up of Paula Llana, Daniel Alamillos, María Villa, Jorge Vara and
Diego de la Nava, formed by Professor Jorge Álvarez.
This tournament
has a special characteristic, during the group stage the Swiss system is used,
with the exception of the first round in which the clashes are random, the
debate rounds mean that teams that carry the same number of victories face each
other, in such a way that the tournament generates an even higher competitive
level. In addition, to add difficulty, the results of each round were not made public,
so that, until the teams that had qualified for the knockout phase were
announced, they did not know that the CEU San Pablo-II team had made it full of
victories and that the CEU San Pablo-I team had been second in the standings,
having only lost against their university colleagues.
For the
quarterfinals and semifinals, each CEU team was moved to the opposite side of
the match table, making it easier for them to meet again in the grand final
after winning the two debates that separated them. And after doing so, the confrontation
was repeated; again, both teams defended the same positions as in the group
stage, but this time the result was different and the CEU San Pablo-I team
managed to win.
In addition to
this double collective success, which is unusual in this type of tournament, it
is worth noting the success of Miguel Hermenegildo, who was chosen as the best
introducer of the tournament. The victory of the CEU San Pablo-I team
automatically qualifies it for the Final Phase of the Spanish League of
University Debate (LEDU), being the first team to achieve this so far in the
2022 edition.
The training for
this tournament, as well as their participation, is part of the activities of
the University Debate Club which, for the second consecutive year, is directed
by Marta Villa. This club gives weekly classes at the Faculty of Law and, in
addition, participates practically every month in different debate tournaments
that are organized by different educational institutions throughout the country.
Currently, about 50 students are members of this club, being one of the largest
and most active in the University. Participation in these types of activities
encourages in students many of the most demanding skills in today's
professional environment, such as mental agility, teamwork, public speaking and
leadership. In addition, students acquire training to improve their critical
spirit in order to face the different challenges presented by today's society.
