In keeping with the university’s
international vocation and identity and its aim to offer students a global
education and multicultural experience, CEU MUN Teen has celebrated its second
edition. This project is based on the Model
United Nations, in which students assume the roles of countries and
international organisations and act as delegates of United Nations committees,
representing their ideals and values on relevant issues.
Led by students Ana Urda Otero (Double Degree in Law
and Criminology and Security Sciences) and Pablo
Espinar Muñoz (Degree in Law with certificate in EU Law), the project has taken
shape over four sessions held at the University with the participation of more
than 200 students from 31 schools in the Community of Madrid and the
CEU San Pablo School in Murcia, from third year of Secondary Education up to
second year of Baccalaureate.
María García Torrente, Human Rights Officer at the
United Nations (Geneva), opened the sessions with her lecture entitled 'Working at the United Nations in the
Protection and Promotion of Human Rights.'
Participating students replicated
current UN debates, negotiating to find common ground in addressing the issues
raised in the different committees. A great opportunity to learn about the
world and diplomacy, leadership in teams, practise public speaking and
languages, and meet other students with similar interests and tastes.
Some of the topics addressed were
new artificial intelligences, the limitation of freedom of the press and
freedom of expression as an attack on democracy, human rights violations in the
textile industry, the approval of a global digital currency, China's business
expansion, the creation of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East,
neutralisation of the use of information and communication technologies,
financing of terrorism and the fight against money laundering for criminal
purposes, or the situation in Western Sahara and respect for human rights.
A total of 30 awards were given in
the following categories: "best
delegate"; "best
diplomatic attitude", "honourable
mention" and "best
position paper".
