With the academic year coming to an
end, the university has celebrated its traditional 'Farewell Day', a ceremonial
good-bye to the 200 international students who have studied a semester or a
whole academic year, coming from universities all over Europe, the United
States, South Korea, Taiwan, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Colombia. Diplomas
and academic scholarships were awarded.
The Vice-Rector for
Internationalisation, Ainhoa Uribe, and the international academic coordinator
of the Faculty of Medicine, Begoña Jiménez, addressed the students during the
meeting. In her speech, Uribe reminded students that this experience has been
"one stop on your journey, full of emotions, hopes and dreams: a journey
that does not end. It is time to return to the station. Some of you are very
clear about your calling, but in other cases it is not so clear and you will
have doubts about your destination." The Vice-Rector encouraged those
in doubt, "let yourself be guided by courage, using your knowledge and
ethical sense. Improving society depends on having the will to change things,
to create the future, and this is in your hands."
Also speaking on behalf of their
fellow students were Mario Criscenti, from the Università di Palermo, and
Francesco Marra, from the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II; the
Dutch students Elizabet Bakalova and Meagan Wouters, from the Stichting Haagse
Hogeschool; Thibaut Allard, from the Université Montesquieu Bordeaux IV;
and Hugo Antonio Villalobos Romero, student at the Universidad Panamericana de
Méjico, who recounted, with words of thanks, their stay and their experiences
at the University.
