Studying the Dual Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy + Optics and Optometry at Universidad CEU San Pablo, you will get a complete profile in two professional areas of the health sector with maximum employability, the pharmacist and optometrist optician.

Our innovative six-year curriculum integrates a solid scientific education with the development of skills to practice in the different areas of each profession. In addition, the main focus is on practical learning with almost 1,700 hours. With these two bachelor’s degrees you will internalize the knowledge while solving clinical cases in simulation spaces such as the Virtual Classroom of Pharmacy Office or the Virtual Classroom of Optical Establishment, and you will have access to supervised practices certified by AENOR.

In addition, to boost your career, we offer you an internationalization plan that includes, among other things, the possibility of studying at foreign universities, studying the Double Degree in bilingual modality, and even studying an international program at The University of Chicago.

The Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (face-to-face) + Optics and Optometry (blended) is taught in a blended format from the first year so that you can combine your studies with other educational, personal and professional activities. However, you will have 40% of face-to-face practical lessons in specialized laboratories (700 hours) and optician's offices (270 hours).

 

Our supervised internships are developed both in Pharmacy Offices and in Hospital Pharmacy and in the clinical ophthalmological field, optical establishments, specialized laboratories, and optometric clinics of visual therapy.

You will also have access to extracurricular internships in pharmaceutical laboratories such as Bexal Farmacéutica, Laboratorios Lilly or Roche Farma and in companies in the health sector such as GE Healthcare or Jansseg-Cilag, among others.

You will receive more than 750 hours of curricular practice in our 60 laboratories equipped with advanced instrumentation, including:

  • Center of Excellence in Metabolomics and Bioanalysis (CEMBIO)

  • Pharmacology and Experimental Toxicology Unit
  • Cell Culture Unit
  • Molecular Biology Laboratory
  • Optical Technology and Assembly Laboratory

  • Optometry Laboratory and Low Vision Laboratory
  • Vision Therapy and Virtual Optics

We train competitive pharmacists and opticians-optometrists with an experiential learning methodology. You will learn to solve real cases in our virtual classrooms that recreate pharmacy offices and optical establishments and function as a simulator for the practice of the profession.

In the last year of your studies, you will also be able to assist real patients in volunteer work with people without resources to whom, under the guidance of the teachers, visual examinations, glasses fitting and special tests (retinography) are performed.

You will be able to study a course at the prestigious American university The University of Chicago and specialize in the discovery, evaluation and monitoring of new drugs.

We give you all the options to obtain an international profile throughout your studies:

  • Bilingual degree: you will be able to study the degree in Spanish or in bilingual mode (Spanish-English). 
  • Mobility to foreign universities: we have more than 90 agreements with leading foreign universities such as King's College London or Université Paris-Saclay.
  • COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) projects: collaborative learning projects with students from international universities.
  • International Online Program: you will be able to take courses at Arizona University.
  • Language Center: study the language of your choice in our Language Center.

A high percentage of the teaching staff are PhDs, and the entire faculty has extensive knowledge and experience in the different subjects covered by the program.

The University of Chicago (Clinical Trials Management)

The CEU-The University of Chicago Program is aimed at students from the School of Pharmacy who want to acquire an in-depth understanding of clinical trial management and develop the skills and knowledge necessary to lead clinical research studies. It includes a training period in Madrid and a semester of training in Chicago (USA).

This proposal of two simultaneous degrees covers the strong demand of companies in the pharmaceutical sector and trains you for everything related to primary care in visual health, prevention, and improvement of people's vision. To do so, you need to master the following competencies, among others:

Identify, design, obtain, analyze, control, produce and administer drugs and medicines, as well as other products and raw materials of health interest for human and veterinary use. Evaluate the therapeutic and toxic effects of substances with pharmacological activity.

To manage medicines. Preserve, guard, dispense and rationally distribute medicines and other pharmaceutical products. Elaborate magistral formulas and officinal preparations. Provide pharmaceutical care to patients. To perform the invoicing of a Pharmacy Office, if necessary.

Acquire the relative knowledge to be able to perform visual examinations effectively in each of its phases and for the subsequent issuance of opinions, reports, and expert opinions. To know, design and apply prevention and maintenance programs related to the visual health of the population.

To develop the ability to provide therapeutic advice in pharmacotherapy and diet therapy, as well as in the nutritional and dietary field. To learn to promote the rational use of medicines and medical devices and to intervene in clinical and social pharmacy activities, following the pharmaceutical care cycle.

To learn the methods to evaluate the toxicological effects of substances and to design and apply the corresponding tests and analyses, including the hygienic-sanitary ones. Likewise, to know how to design, apply and evaluate reagents, methods and analytical techniques, handling the basic fundamentals of clinical analysis and the characteristics and contents of laboratory diagnostic reports.

Mature communication and information skills, oral and written, to deal adequately with patients and users of the center in which they perform their professional work, in addition to promoting work and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary teams and related to other health professionals. 

Understand the general structure of Optometry and its connection with other specific and complementary disciplines. Finally, it is necessary to develop the profession recognizing one's own limitations and the need to maintain and update professional competence.

Incorporate the ethical and legal principles of the profession into professional practice, respecting patient autonomy and integrating social and community aspects in decision making.

The main focus of learning

Curricular internships: they are carried out in the more than 60 laboratories of the School in groups of a maximum of 12 students per professor. Occasionally, these internships will also take place in external facilities such as private ophthalmology clinics or university hospitals.

Tutored internships: to learn the professional reality of pharmacists and opticians. These internships have received the quality certification issued by AENOR together with the International Certification Network (IQNet), being the first faculty of this discipline in Spain to obtain this recognition.

First formalised IQAS at the level of Universidad San Pablo-CEU  that guarantees the quality and continuous improvement of its Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
